Personal feelings will always be present at work
Heard a sales manager recently say:
"Check your personal feelings at the door."
Huh? Have you ever...
- Had a parent that was incredibly sick or dying
- Had a kid with health or development challenges
- Gone through a divorce
- Had a spouse get laid off and worry about mortgage
- Unexpectedly been a homeschooling teacher
Or any other of the million BIG things life throws at you?
Even the most Stoic of us are affected at work, by life.
And it comes out VERY differently for different people.
But expecting people to "check their feelings"...
At the door - or - virtual door...
Is impractical.
Especially as life / work have merged for so many this year.
If you know someone on your team is going through some shit and it's affecting them at work...
Be supportive.
Be empathetic.
Be understanding.
Be flexible.
Work still needs to get done, for sure.
But it's normal for big life events to impact us at work.
We're humans.
Not machines.
And when these things pass...
Your entire team will likely remember the support offered.
